Facebook Messenger is finally getting an ‘unsend’ feature

Facebook Messenger just announced an upcoming feature that will let users “unsend” messages, including photos.

Messenger will let users “remove a message from a chat thread after it’s been sent,” according to the app’s update 191.0 patch notes on the iOS App Store. Users have 10 minutes to remove their message or photo, which is ample amount of time to swoop in and delete any personal information or photos accidentally sent to the wrong IM. As for when Facebook Messenger users can expect the new feature, the company simply teased that it’s “coming soon.”

The Daily Dot reached out to Facebook for comment but did not receive a response as of this article’s publication.

Facebook Messenger users knew for quite some time that the social media company was working on a message deletion system. After Facebook confessed that it was removing personal messages sent by Mark Zuckerberg, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Dot that it planned to roll out an unsend ability to all users.

“We have [internally] discussed this feature several times. And people using our secret message feature in the encrypted version of Messenger have the ability to set a timer—and have their messages automatically deleted. We will now be making a broader delete message feature available,” the spokesperson told the Daily Dot in April. “This may take some time. And until this feature is ready, we will no longer be deleting any executives’ messages.”

Along with the upcoming unsend ability, Facebook also teased “a handful of new features,” including “color gradients and a re-skinned interface.”

No specific timeline was given in the App Store notes for those changes either.
