Fox News host calls Trump out for backpedaling on gun control

Fox News host Shepard Smith slammed President Donald Trump on Monday for contradicting his vow to raise age restrictions on buying guns.

Last month, Trump pushed raising the age limit for purchasing semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21, even without support from the National Rifle Association. But it didn’t take long for him to backtrack on that.

Trump tweeted on Monday that the White House would support gun control measures approved by the NRA but not changing age limits. He tweeted there’s “not much political support” on the age issue.

“That’s not true,” Smith said. “It’s just not factually accurate. There is broad-based support for raising the gun age limit.”

Smith has his facts right. A recent poll revealed there’s widespread support for raising age limits on buying assault rifles, and for years Democrats have been fighting for common-sense gun control laws.
The Fox News host implied that Trump is pandering to the NRA instead of keeping his word to survivors of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida.

“The president told the kids at Parkland, ‘I’ll go strong on this, I’ll work on this age thing,’” Smith said. “He came up to the general public and said to the Congress, ‘Oh, the NRA has a lot of pressure on you, has a lot of effect on you, but not on me so much.’ And then he met with the NRA.”
