On Friday Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coast and inundated Houston. In the past few days the city received more rainfall than its annual average, and the flooding has displaced thousands. The hip-hop community has come to the aid of its town: Houston-area legend Bun B organized relief efforts, and Lil B the Based God offered free verses to any rapper affected by the flooding. But until now, no one has stood up to Harvey and straight-up dissed it.
But a local rapper known on SoundCloud as Biggie Balls dropped a diss track of the storm, just titled “Hurricane Harvey Diss Track,” and it’s actually pretty great.
“You tryna be like Ugly God, drop water all over Houston you need to get a job,” he raps over a trap beat made by newstreetmelody beats. He ends the song with a few ad-libbed threats: “I swear you so done for, bruh.”
The song, he says, was brought on by several days of waiting out the weather.
“We were trapped inside for like four days so it was pretty boring,” Balls tells the Daily Dot. “I was up late and just thought ‘I should make a diss track on the hurricane.’”
On Tuesday the storm finally started to let up, and celebrities across the country have donated millions to aid and relief efforts. As a Texan with family and friends in Houston, this comical diss track provides some emotional relief from the stress of this past week. As one of the SoundCloud comments on the song affirms: “Yo hurricane Harvey just got sent to the shadow realm!”
“I thought it’d be pretty funny and bring a lighthearted approach to a serious situation, try to lighten the mood a little bit,” Balls says.
