Jon Snow RIPS into Lily Allen as she says ‘I didn’t used to have money’ in rant

LILY ALLEN was hammered online after she took aim at the Government following the Grenfell Tower disaster and claimed she didn’t used to have money.

Speaking on Channel 4 News, the singer accused the government of “trying to micromanage grief” as more than 100 people are feared to have died in the inferno.

Online users targeted the star as one told her to “stick to singing” after she commented on the tragedy.

In an interview with Jon Snow the singer said: “I think first of all if we are talking about reality into these people’s lives, I think what people would really like is a more honest account of how many people have actually died in this event. How many people have been killed?

“And I think the humanitarian effort on the ground here, volunteering which has been led by community leaders and volunteers is not being led by the council the people who run this community.

“It is chaotic, they don’t have any experience with it and I think it is actually playing into the hands of the government because once these people’s hope turns to anger, they have got a real problem on their hands.

“I think the government is trying to micromanage people’s grieving here.

“I have never in my entire life seen an event like this where the death count has been downplayed by the mainstream media. 17? I’m sorry but I am hearing the figure is much closer to 150 and that many of those people are children.”

Presenter Jon Snow questioned Ms Allen, he said: “I suppose people looking at it may say, she’s probably pretty well off, I guess she lives in the nice house and all the rest of it.

To which Ms Allen retorted: “I do now because I earn a lot of money but I didn’t used to when I grew up around here.”

Jon Snow replied: “Really?!”Lily Allen was born in Hammersmith, West London and is the daughter of Welsh comedian Keith Allen and film producer mother Alison Owen. She used to live with comedian Harry Enfield when her mother dated him.Online users blasted the singer after her interview with Jon Snow with many angry at her her comments, with one telling her to “stick to singing”.
One said: “Lily Allen on Channel 4 News displayed her usual childlike understanding of anything – not interfering with her blind prejudices.”

“Somebody lock Lily Allen in a cupboard. Self-publicising bore,” another said.

A third added: “I’m really uncomfortable even debating this, it feels wrong. I just feel strongly that Lily Allen’s claims are irresponsible.”

Some Twitter users backed the star for speaking out following the disaster.

One said: “Well done for having the courage to speak the truth where others would dare to manipulate it. Thank you”

“Well said Lily. It needed to be spoken aloud. Respect to you for putting yourself in the firing line again,” another commented.

Prime Minister Theresa May visited the scene on Thursday morning after promising a “proper investigation” amid growing concerns about how the fire could have spread so rapidly.

Dany Cotton, the London Fire Commissioner said: “My crews that turned up did absolutely sterling work. They got in there they were very committed, even though the building was alight top to bottom, they were in fear of their own lives.

“They went into that building, time after time, to rescue the people that we knew were in there, there was never any hesitation.

“As the commissioner of London Fire Brigade, I was truly anxious for a long time about the safety of the building and my firefighters in there. But they were not going to stop until they physically couldn’t get in there anymore.”

The Commissioner added that searching the building will take weeks as they attempt to identify who died during the blaze.

Ms Cotton also said that the fire services suffered minor injuries as they tried to rescue those stuck in the fire.

As the recovery effort continues more than £500,000 has been raised for those affected by the fire.
