Here’s the long-awaited ‘Game of Thrones’ season 8 release date

Game of Thrones season 8 (and winter itself) is about to arrive on our doorsteps.

The question of when Game of Thrones will return has been on the top of fans’ minds for the past 17 months. HBO confirmed in a press release from January 2018 that we wouldn’t get new Game of Thrones episodes until 2019, and over the course of the year, HBO narrowed the release date window from 2019 to the first half of 2019 and then April 2019.

With the new season on the horizon, HBO has ramped up its Game of Thrones promotion. It first released a five-second clip in an overview of its 2019 slate during the Golden Globes and then teased the season premiere reveal on social media.

Ahead of the True Detective season 3 premiere Sunday night, HBO revealed in a new teaser that Game of Thrones season 8 air time and premiere date. Here’s everything you need to know.

Game of Thrones season 8 premiere date

Game of Thrones season 8 will premiere on April 14. The reveal came at the end of an official teaser called “Crypts of Winterfell,” which shows the Jon Snow and the Stark sisters reunited in, well, the crypts of Winterfell, hearing some voices from the past. It’s unclear if it’s footage from season 8 or just some teaser footage to further build anticipation.

The season will consist of six episodes, which HBO chief Richard Plepler recently likened to watching six movies. “They knew the bar was high,” he told Variety. “They’ve exceeded the bar. I’ve watched them twice without any CGI and I’m in awe. Everybody’s in for an extraordinary treat of storytelling and of magical, magical production.”

Game of Thrones season 8 air time

As with previous seasons, Game of Thrones season 8’s air time will be 9pm EST (8pm CST).
