Trump’s plan to save Notre Dame would destroy it

President Donald Trump weighed in on the destructive fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Monday, suggesting that authorities use “flying water tankers” to help put out the blaze.

“So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!” the president wrote.

However, as many people have pointed out, that scenario would only make the situation worse.

Wayne McPartland, a retired New York City Fire Department battalion chief, told CNBC that doing something similar to Trump’s plan would collapse the historic building.

“If you hit that with tons of water from above, that’s going to collapse the entire structure and make the situation worse,” McPartland told the news outlet. “If you miss, you might hit civilians in the street.”

A firefighter with the NYPD also told the Daily Dot that plan would cause the building to “crumble.”

Other people had similar sentiments online.

The president was full of suggestions on Monday. Hours before his Notre Dame tweet, he said Boeing should “fix” and “rebrand” the Boeing 737 Max 8 planes after they’ve been grounded following two fatal crashes.
